Coronavirus (Covid-19) and infection prevention and control
See the latest information for care providers, to support you in managing staff and supporting service users.
The purpose of this content is to provide care home staff with up to date information around infection prevention and control. This includes national and local guidance (Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland), which is evidence based or represents best practice. Staff working in other social care environments will find that some information is also applicable to their work settings.

Additional support for care homes during the COVID-19 outbreak
The Public Health department at Leicestershire County Council are providing COVID-19 specific infection prevention and control (IPC) advice to care homes across Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland.
The scope of the service is to:
- Provide IPC advice relating to the safe management of COVID-19 in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland care homes
- Respond to calls and emails from care homes who have a concern or query relating to IPC and COVID-19
- Undertake regular monitoring calls to care homes with an active outbreak following notification from Public Health England (PHE)
- Support the consistent dissemination of up to date local and national guidance across the three Local Authorities within LLR
All care home staff and associated professionals can access IPC advice and support relating to COVID-19 in care homes by email infection@leics.gov.uk or by phone (0116 3051525). The service is accessible Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm).
Due to the volumes of calls we are currently receiving please email infection@leics.gov.uk for all other infection prevention queries, as we are prioritising COVID-19 at this time.
All outbreaks of infection should be reported to Public Health England (formerly the Health Protection Agency/Unit) on 0344 225 4524 Option 1. If you are concerned that a resident/service user has an infection, then you should contact their GP in the first instance.

Members of the public
Should a member of the public have an enquiry about a COVID-19 or infection prevention and control in a care home setting, then you are advised to contact the local authority through the main enquiry contact details initially where you enquiry can be directed to the most appropriate department.
