SEND school developments

In spring 2018 the county council launched a new strategy for the future provision for pupils having Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Leicestershire SEND Strategy 2017-2021    Opens new window

Developing specialist SEND provision

Schools will have recently heard more about this part of the strategy via a letter from the council.

In Leicestershire there are already six very successful special schools and a large number of specialist resource bases/units. However, the successful delivery of our strategy requires that we embark on an ambitious programme of development to have new units and resource bases in place to meet the increased demand arising from new births, housing development and the early identification of need.

To achieve this we are now inviting expressions of interest from all maintained schools and academies who may wish to establish a specialist unit for pupils with Social Emotional Mental Health needs, or Communication and Interaction needs, principally ASD.

Read the guidance information below and submit the expression of interest form by noon on Friday 23 November.

Developing SEND support in mainstream schools

There are a number of other planned projects to respond to what schools have told us about supporting children and young people with SEND. These include:

  • Reviewing funding systems
  • Reviewing draft EHCP criteria
  • Reviewing resources available to schools and accessibility of these
  • Creating a mapping tool showing Leicestershire provision and support available

If you would like to be involved in any of these please email Mhairi.Mcdonald@leics.gov.uk
