Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC)

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) frequently endure trauma and adverse childhood experiences, necessitating additional support to maximise their educational opportunities.

Leicestershire Virtual School is available to assist schools and educational settings in ensuring that these young individuals can overcome their learning barriers.

Accessing educational provisions: for young people in academic year 11 or below

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children confirmed to be in Year 11 or below are entitled to statutory schooling upon their arrival in the UK, even while their asylum claims are being processed by the Home Office. Social Workers should complete the school admissions request: Apply for a school place in consultation with the young person and care givers.

Once the admission form has been submitted, Leicestershire County Council admissions team coordinates with the nominated school to arrange a pre-admissions meeting that includes the caregiver(s), young person, social worker, and a representative from Leicestershire Virtual School.
