Our first Research Skills Conference

Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Leicestershire hosted its first research skills conference for Leicestershire County Council staff on 14 November 2024.

HDRC Leicestershire hosting their first Research Skills Conference for council staff

The aim of the conference was to:

  • update staff around the progress of the HDRC Leicestershire
  • showcase how research is currently being used in the council
  • give staff the opportunity to take part in workshops around research methods, drafting a grant application, working with universities, and systemic literature reviews

The topics for the workshops were developed based on findings from a summer 2024 staff survey that helped identify research training needs across the council. We would like to thank the presenters of these sessions, with special thanks to those who stepped in last minute to cover for presenters who were unwell on the day.

During the conference we also highlighted the importance and experience of public involvement in research through a presentation from our Public and Community Involvement, Engagement and Participation Manager and Public Co-Applicant.

Academic posters were also on display throughout the conference showcasing data and research staff had previously been involved in. Topics ranged from gambling harms to active mums, and air quality to nutrition. The HDRC Leicestershire team were very impressed with the standard of posters and are grateful to everyone who took part in the poster displays.

The conference was attended by 89 staff, with representation from all departments across the council.

Evaluation and feedback from the conference will help us shape future training events.

All speakers were very good and got the information across well. I enjoyed the Menti [online quiz], and the interaction side of things. You come away feeling excited, like you really want to do some research.

Other positive feedback included delegates appreciating the opportunities for networking and meeting staff from other departments, as well as increasing confidence in each of the areas explored in the workshops.

After the success of this conference, the HDRC Leicestershire team will be looking to host similar events in 2025.

Thank you to everyone who took part in attending and organising this conference.
